Create opportunities to talk about math throughout the day and children will begin to see math all around them. When we only engage in a “math time,” children are less likely to fully gain how math is applied in our lives. When gathering coats or mittens from cubbies, point out to the children that we are “sorting” items. Mention that when we line up that a child is in the fifth spot, the ordinal number for 5. There are many opportunities to use our math vocabulary throughout our day — ensure that students visual and think about math even when it’s not “math time.”
