Ever get tired of passing things out while your students are at circle time or morning meeting? Ever lose that teachable moment because your students don’t have the needed supplies readily at hand on the carpet?
Well, if you’ve ever had either of these issues, this is an idea for you.
I purchased a canvas or vinyl tote bag for each of my students. I picked these up at the dollar store! Then, inside of the bags the children keep all the items that we use daily on the carpet or class meeting area. Some of these items are: Their student calendar notebooks, word family book, traveling word wall, academic vocabulary notebooks, unit vocabulary notebooks, a book of lists, nursery rhyme notebook, a yes/no response stick, various charts (such as alphabet, blends and diagraphs, classmate photos and names, etc.), and a bag with needed supplies such as a dry erase pen, a few pencils and crayons, needed manipulatives, etc.
I have the children store these bags in a few baskets in the classroom. Each morning, the children get their bags out of the baskets and put them on their meeting spot. Then, at the end of the day, they return the bag back to the basket. This strategy will not only save you time, but will encourage you to take advantage of teachable moments.
