Expose Students to New Kinds of Texts in a Whole Group Setting

Before we ask students to create new kinds of texts, we should be sure to expose them to said format in a whole group setting. Take time to point out the components that make it fit into a particular category and any text features you want them to consider adding to their own writing and tell your students why the an author uses each feature you point out. Exposure students to a variety of texts frequently, being sure to highlight writer’s craft each time. Repeated exposure will increase the likelihood of it showing up in students’ writing.
